RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN
COOPERSTOWN NEW YORK
With
Otsego Lake spanning nine stunning miles and a baseball theme
omnipresent, Cooperstown provides a perfect setting for the active family
travelers

Glimmerglass State Park offers
great swimming during the summer season (photo by Eric J. Hurwitz)
The
recreational opportunities that abound in Cooperstown cater to kids of
all ages. Whether three-years-old
or 97, Cooperstown offers so many fun things to do for the recreation
enthusiast!
The
Barnyard
Swing,
five
miles south of the Village of Cooperstown on Route 28,
features
miniature golf, gem panning, ice cream, and a game room with a pool
table.
The
Clark
Sports Center (Susquehanna
Ave., Tel. 607-547-2800) is
a truly amazing facility, offering an indoor swimming pool and running
track, basketball court, weightlifting areas, a bowling alley, outdoor
soccer fields and tennis courts, and more! Every community should have
something like this!
Cooperstown Dreams Park
(4550
St Hwy 28, Cooperstown, NY, 704-630-0050)
is the home to the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Invitational
tournaments,
bringing in thousands of
families each season to watch their children play in an idyllic
baseball park with a fabulous mountain setting.
Cooperstown
Fun Park
(4850
St
Hwy 28, Tel. (607)547-2767) mixes modern park
attractions with the traditional, including a "lazer
tag arena," "go-karts," bumper boats, batting cages, a pitching radar
gun, miniature golf, a "Blues Clues" bouncy for children five and
younger, arcade games and a snack bar.
The
Doubleday
Batting Range (13
Susquehanna Ave., Doubleday Court, Tel, 607-547-1852)
is
one of Cooperstown's most fun recreational facilities with batting
ranges at varying levels, a radar gun to test your pitching speed,
arcade games and a refreshment stand with hot dogs, hamburgers and more
junk food favorites. Baseball-theme background music plays in the
background, adding real fun-time atmosphere to the facility.
The
management staff is pleasant and the hired kids seem to enjoy their
jobs.
We
could write a book of everything we like about Glimmerglass State Park (1527 Co. Rte 31,
607-547-8662),
but for brevity purposes, we'll just say that there's nothing nicer
than spending a warm summer day swimming in the pristine lake.
The sparkling water and sand beach -- framed by
beautiful
hills and open green land -- will leave you breathless yet full of
clean
country air to breathe. The beach offers a refreshment stand, ample
picnic areas and places to run, play and feel alive again. The rest of
the park is just as nice with hiking, fishing and camping
opportunities. In the winter, Glimmerglass State Park is perfect for
cross country skiing, snow tubing and skating!
Three-Mile
Point (Route
80)
and
Fairy Spring
Park (County
Route 33) offer pleasant
designated swimming beaches with picnic area, both beautiful places to
be, also, on a summer day at Otsego Lake!
You
can also rent your own boat for a day of relaxation on Otsego Lake at
Sam Smith's
Boat Yard (6098
State Highway 80, Tel., 607- 547-2543), just two miles from the
Village of Cooperstown.
